Argyle Diamond Mine Closure

Located in the East Kimberly region of Western Australia, Rio Tinto’s Argyle Diamond Mine was one of the largest diamond producers in the world and the world’s largest supplier of natural colored diamonds. The mine ceased operations in November 2020 and is now undergoing a comprehensive closure project to restore the natural ecosystem and return the land to the Traditional Owners: the Miriwoong, Gija, Malgnin, and Woolah people.

The regulatory framework to efficiently close a mine, return the land to natural state, and meet all environmental and Traditional Owner requirements is highly complex and we’re delighted to be part of the process.

Our team of environmental engineers is providing training and mentorship of Traditional Owner Rangers and working as an integrated team, we’re developing technical assessments and designs to meet regulatory requirements for post-closure outcomes—including restoring the natural ecosystem through site remediation, environmental monitoring, innovative approaches to pit-lake sampling, hazardous materials, and waste management.
