Conducting a comprehensive environment hazard assessment using innovative predictive modeling
Our client was looking to meet environmental assessment commitments and requirements from the District of Squamish and the British Columbia (BC) Oil and Gas Commission. To support their efforts, we conducted a comprehensive debris flow, debris flood, and flood hazard assessment in three watersheds on the west coast of BC.
Applying innovative technical solutions using our DebrisFlow Predictor, we used events from approximately 65 years of historic landslides in the region to calibrate a model of debris flow. To estimate the direct threats from potential future landslides, we generated nearly 2,000 landslide models to demonstrate proposed threats to facilities, landslide contribution of sediment to streams, and subsequent debris flood scenarios.
The results gave our client scenarios to identify specific critical elements at risk, such as human occupancy and infrastructure that could be affected under each scenario. We used this information to advise a mitigation design to the client’s satisfaction.
