Helping to improve the transportation network and reduce regional ecological impacts
Colonial Boulevard, from I-75 to SR 82, is a major east-west urban arterial roadway connecting eastern Lee County, Florida to Interstate 75. With a projected 120,000 vehicles per day by the year 2030, this roadway widening supports Lee County DOT’s aggressive program to improve their transportation network and prepare the roadway for future congestion.
We approached this six-lane widening in two phases. We designed modifications to the I-75 interchange which featured “signal by-pass lanes”. These lanes separate thru-traffic from vehicles entering the roadway and allow them to pass through without interruption from the traffic signals located at the off ramps. We also widened the bridge over the 6 Mile Cypress Slough, a highly protected ecological resource, which required permitting a 27-acre regional stormwater management facility that will provide water quality mitigation and serve future area expansion. The expansion also required relocation of impacted utilities within the right-of-way.
Our team of roadway designers, utility and stormwater engineers, and ecologists provided integrated expertise necessary to provide a successful project. We partnered with county staff to achieve an outside the box solution to reduce ecological impacts to the region while improving safety and capacity for the community.
