Improving roadway safety and accessibility for all who walk, roll, or ride
As one of the busiest transportation hubs in the nation, the City of Jersey City wanted to create safer and more accessible streets for all transportation users. As part of their Vision Zero initiative, the City needed guidance on developing a “traffic calming toolkit” to help them identify, prioritize, and implement traffic calming measures. They reached out to us to help.
We conducted an extensive literature review and established a selection matrix that allowed the City to choose appropriate traffic calming measures for a particular location given roadway and right-of-way conditions. Using geographic information systems (GIS), along with demographic, traffic, equity, and crash data, we also helped rank and prioritize street segments within the City, identifying high crash-risk locations most in need of traffic calming. Additionally, we developed plan sets and assisted with implementation of two demonstration projects. We also provided plan sets for 12 other potential future project locations.
The City continues to build a safer, more accessible, and more equitable transportation system for all road users including pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders of all ages and abilities. They even achieved zero deaths on local roads in 2022, earning the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s (NJDOT’s) Excellence and Champion Award in 2023.
