Expanding a vital thoroughfare
Providing access to Auckland’s main port Quay Street is a hub for tourists and ferry commuters that contributes to a public transport interchange. It also links the CBD to Auckland’s waterfront. With complex safety and operational issues in a highly constrained environment, the street needed to expand to accommodate the needs of a busy town.
The solution? A two-way, one-kilometer long dedicated cycleway constructed in the waterside vehicle lane between Lower Hobson and Plummer Streets. Opening in July 2016, the cycleway registered more than 200,000 trips in its first year and has proven to be a vital connection for commuters, tourists and recreational users. It connects to the Nelson Street cycleway, the Beach Road cycleway, and via Beach Road to the Grafton Cycle Path and the North Western Motorway Cycle Path. It will also connect to the future Tamaki Drive cycleway.
We provided project management, designed the facility, and submitted and managed obtaining all statutory approvals including resource consents for tree removal, earthworks in the potentially contaminated reclamation, and an outline plan of work. We also prepared the physical works contract documents, provided technical support and construction oversight. With this vital link now in place, the path is helping Aucklanders shift from vehicles to bicycles.
