We don’t always need large capital investments to improve the safety and capacity of aging (transportation) infrastructure
Smart mobility solutions such as connected infrastructure, autonomous vehicles, data driven mobility, or intelligent transport systems are gaining ground in the transportation industry. To further these emerging smart mobility solutions, the Space Institute Research Corporation (SIRC) partnered with Stantec to help develop CAVTEC, a connected automated vehicle technology laboratory.
This 2,000-acre test bed on the University of Tennessee Space Institute Campus (UTSI) will test and develop future-focused solutions to optimize vehicles and infrastructure for connected technology. Through the unique partnership between SIRC and UTSI, the lab can provide technology partners with a place to demonstrate, test, and certify products and services.
As part of the partnership’s launch, SIRC developed and field tested an Edge computing environment (where computing power is integrated closer to the location it is needed) to recognize and respond to wrong-way driver events. Our job was to lead project management, application development, and post-test data analysis and reporting. This system greatly improved communication between infrastructure, mitigating the risk of an event and reducing false positives—a great example of how CAVTEC is already improving smart mobility.
This first-of-its-kind test facility will work to certify all vehicle platforms—air, water, and land—operating within any infrastructure to enhance the safety and efficiency of our infrastructure network.
