Delivering new capacity and a host of community enhancements for this north Florida city
Tallahassee needed to transform a rural two lane road into a divided highway to ensure the safety of travelers entering or exiting I-10. At that same time, officials embraced the opportunity to apply the city’s Blueprint 2000 framework which encourages a holistic approach to planning, transportation, water quality, environmental, and green space projects.
Teamed with C.W. Roberts Contracting, Inc. on this design-build project, Stantec’s design converted the existing road into a seven lane urban arterial with bike lanes, sidewalks, and a multi-purpose trail. Included were: new sewer mains, water and water re-use lines, environmental impact assessments, and environmental and stormwater permitting. Improved roadway lighting helps travelers easily identify local landmarks, while extensive landscaping beautified the corridor. With an eye towards to the future, significant stormwater improvements allow for projected growth as well as future multi-modal and transit enhancements.
Today, a new winding trail extends to an existing paved trail. Residents on foot or bicycle can now enjoy side trips to local businesses and organized races without having to navigate major highway and road crossings.
