Our community-minded design replaced a structurally deficient bridge and added a multiuse Riverwalk on a constrained site
After the State recognized the Bridge Street Bridge in Westbrook, Maine had deteriorated past its safe, useful life, Stantec was hired to assist in its replacement. As a result of the off-alignment construction of the main two-span bridge, several elements were added, including construction of an independent multiuse Riverwalk bridge, relocation of a signalized intersection, and a separate, adjacent City-driven redevelopment project.
Our team provided engineering services to Maine’s Department of Transportation for the highway bridge replacement, the City of Westbrook for the redevelopment, and three impacted utilities (electric, cable, and telecommunications) for the utility relocation design, all under separate contracts. An operating FERC-regulated hydroelectric facility, located just upstream, required considerable coordination with the facility owner and its future fishway design consultant.
Business impacts were minimal thanks to the off-alignment construction, allowing maintenance of two lanes of vehicular and pedestrian traffic across the river. This award-winning project resulted in a highly sustainable, low-maintenance structure with a prefabricated bow string arch mimicking the pre-existing historic arch bridge, with railing and lighting matching the original.
