Transforming an under-utilised industrial area into a new community featuring sustainable building design with extensive landscaping and public use areas
An under-utilised area for 30 years, the Embankment regeneration project in Cardiff, Wales will transform an existing low-grade industrial site into a thriving sustainable community with new residential, business, leisure, hospitality, and retail facilities. The scheme will open up the river Taff frontage with a new park and provide a new connection across the river with a pedestrian and cycling bridge.
Our client, Vastint UK, commissioned us with all technical, infrastructure, and environmental disciplines as well as preparing most chapters of the environmental statement. The project focuses on high-quality sustainable building design set in a generous landscape with new parks within the public realm. We supported the masterplan design and created a very low traffic environment, concept bridge design, and sustainable design features such as SuDS design, energy concepts, and biodiversity and lighting studies.
After starting in late 2018 with the initial masterplanning studies, the scheme was developed and an outline planning application submitted to Cardiff City Council. A resolution to grant has now been received so plans to regenerate this previously under-utilised part of central Cardiff can proceed, bringing great value to the community by offering health and well-being benefits to residents.
