Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park – Community Stadium

Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park was established in the wake of the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games to deliver a legacy through the four themes of sport, community, economy, and environment. Providing a wide variety of services, our team helped create a community stadium within the park.

Beyond sports, the stadium was designed to support small and medium-sized life sciences businesses by offering high-quality, flexible, and collaborative business space. Working closely with the architects, Whittam Cox, our mechanical, engineering, and plumbing (MEP) specialists provided detailed designs through the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) stages 1–4.

Our role was to design the fundamental mechanical and electrical systems that allow the stadium to perform efficiently and sustainably, minimizing energy and water consumption wherever possible. We also delivered detailed design on the fit out of a flexible workspace for professionals and businesses in the sports, health, wellbeing, and activity sectors.

We were further appointed to deliver fire engineering design from RIBA Stage 4 through to handover. Some areas of the development are considered sporting ground and were designed to specialist Green Guide standards. However, spaces designated for office use warranted a separate design methodology—this meant we needed to assess the development holistically, providing safety to all occupants.

Through unique fire engineering design, we maximized matchday seating potential. The pillars of our strategy involved complex formulas to calculate escape capacity. This promoted safety and compliance regarding occupancy flow, travel distances and gangway design—while also accommodating as many people as possible to safely enjoy the atmosphere of games.

The stadium was completed in June 2022, only 16 months after breaking ground.
