There’s more than one way to use a field
This new turf field has already made a significant, positive impact on the community of Newtown. With its durable surface, it’s ideal for recreation leagues—of adults and youth both—to practice and play on. Due to its quality and reliability, it’s also become the home field for three local college/university intramural leagues, and it brings athletes and visitors to town that wouldn’t have visited otherwise.
The first public artificial turf field in Sarasota County, Bud Thomas Field is a valued resource in the community, and throughout its first year of life, it’s obtained an estimated average of two reservations a day and almost five hours of usage each day.
The field was converted from a heavily utilized—but worn—multi-use softball/open play field which was originally built over an early 20th-century construction debris landfill. The new, oversized multipurpose turf field has fencing, parking, and upgraded lighting as well as a concession stand. It adds the opportunity for full-size fields in soccer, football, and lacrosse as well as the option for three short fields for games like mini-soccer and flag football.
With permanent inlaid striping, the field supports rapid change from one sport to another, maximizing its use and the potential revenue opportunities for the community center. Our contribution was landscape architecture, civil engineering, and synthetic turf specialty design services.
