Developing a detailed design of the highway without restricting future development
After detailed planning permission for a Shell Petrol Station had been granted, we were part of the design team asked to deliver the civil infrastructure to facilitate the construction and secure Local Housing Allowance (LHA) approval. This entailed the detailed design of approximately 100 metres of access highway to serve both the petrol station and the potential future development of a residential care home.
The challenge? A reduced fee budget had been agreed on to deliver the project’s scope of work so the team would be well placed for future, larger project appointments by the Client.
We undertook early and continuous discussions with Somerset County Council (as the adopting authority) to ensure their early engagement in the design process. Following their initial approval we undertook full detailed design of the highway access including vertical alignment, foul and surface water drainage, pavement construction, kerbing layout, signage, road markings, and bill of quantities for inclusion in the Section 38 (which allows developers to carry out works to a public highway) approval.
Highway horizontal and vertical alignment improvements were achieved, which resulted in a shallower surface water and foul drainage system to be installed at reduced construction cost without restricting future development.
