Reducing energy and water usage through sustainable solutions
Fabric mills consume a large amount of water and electricity. When Uniqlo, owned by Fast Retailing, introduced their Uniqlo Responsible Mills Program (RMP) they aimed to alleviate environmental impacts by reducing the use of water and electricity during production in 2017. The goal? The client wanted to achieve a 10 percent energy reduction and a 15 percent water reduction. We were brought in to investigate the mills and develop plans to accomplish their goals.
In partnership with our Energy team, we incorporated external fabric mill production process experts in our project team and conducted on-site inspections on the reduction potential of some participating factories which had large water and energy saving potential. Based on the on-site assessment, our team suggested the use of LED lights, switching to high efficiency motors, heat recovery from the dyeing water, heat insulation enhancement, and many more methods to reach the client’s sustainability goals.
As a result, all participating factories implemented projects and reduced the use of water and electricity by 9.9 percent and 2.2 percent, respectively within a year. Additionally, our clients successfully reduced greenhouse gas emissions across most of their fabric manufacturing suppliers. We also helped Uniqlo conduct data analysis and reporting as one of the key components of their annual corporate social responsibility (CSR) report.
