Increasing facility capabilities to support a growing demand

Canadian Autoparts Toyota Inc. (CAPTIN) cranks out 6,000 wheel rims a day. That’s a respectable figure, but they wanted to grow. Their goal was to expand their facility and up their production capacity.  The problem was that they had limited space and a short time span.

Our team was called in to figure out scope, schedule, costs—and design. We organized the contract into seven packages including preload, mechanical equipment, electrical equipment, and structural steel. With an eye to the timeline, we were able to organize simultaneous construction and steel erection.  But there was another challenge. Local regulatory requirements. We met with local authorities to discuss what they needed. We conducted a conceptual study, determining the maximum size of the expansion while complying with regulations. This new expansion, meeting the needs of both CAPTIN and the community, increased production capacity by 50 percent, upping wheel rim production from 6,000 a day to 9,000 a day.
