Environmentally friendly design takes the long view in major capital projects
Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is one of North America’s fastest-growing airports, and with that growth comes a few challenges: passenger volume is expected to increase dramatically in the next few decades. So, to be prepared, the Airport Authority launched their CORE program—a resilience-based subset of the YVR 2037 Master Plan.
As part of the CORE program, we’re designing (through an integrated design process) a new parkade (architectural and electrical), providing electrical infrastructure upgrades in the ITB terminal building, and delivering a power study for the entire CORE electrical infrastructure project. Aging infrastructure will be replaced—improving power reliability—and travelers will have more efficient parking, reducing congestion. Stantec is also the overall consultant project manager and coordinator for the entire CORE project, which includes a new utility building, new parkade, outdoor mechanical and electrical infrastructure, and new electrical and mechanical infrastructure in the terminal buildings.
Working with YVR from initial design all the way through contract administration, we used the Envision framework to meet the project sustainability goals. With these measures in place, YVR is reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing the redundancy and resiliency of their electrical infrastructure, and improving the sustainability of the airport.
The project is currently partially built and some of the program components were revised or were reconsidered due to the impact of the pandemic.
