Collaborating for superior results
Trust and open communication formed the basis of a Stantec-University of Alberta (UA) partnership that successfully managed a $1.8 billion capital renewal program through an on-site, award-winning Project Management Office. As owner's representative, Stantec worked in a fully integrated and collaborative manner with UA managers and Capital Planning staff. The PMO was responsible for managing the planning, development, implementation, and post-construction phases of projects including budgeting; participating in consultant and contractor selection; risk, design, and schedule management; procurement strategies; and contract administration, commissioning, and close-out.
From 1999 to 2012, we managed 24 major facility projects totaling 3.86 million square feet. As part of a capacity transfer program, we developed a project management manual that provides standardized guidelines for implementing and managing projects, and developed and delivered eight project management training modules to UA staff. We also developed and delivered a lessons learned database that helps improve delivery from project to project, providing a knowledge base for the future use by the UA.
