Once completed, this new bridge will be one of the widest, highest, and longest spanning bridges crossing the Bow River in Calgary.
Our team was engaged to design the first component of the West Calgary Ring Road, known as the Bow River Bridge, and provide construction supervision as the owners engineer during project delivery. The bridge will be a five-span, 500-metre-long bridge over the Bow River, directly west of the existing Stoney Trail bridge.
The project presented several challenges: working with limited workspace onsite, configuring the long span length of the bridge, and navigating constrained accessibility. The new bridge is being built using a complex, segmentally cast-in-place, balanced cantilever method. This means the superstructure of the bridge—the part of the bridge that rests on the piers (the upright support for the structure) and abutments (substructure at the ends of a bridge span), will be built out from the six separate piers and abutments and joined together at completion. This rare construction method is coupled with in-river work to build the foundations for two piers, as well as revisions to The City of Calgary pathway network to facilitate construction.
This project is part of the final phase of construction on the Calgary Ring Road. When completed, the Calgary Ring Road will provide over 100 kilometres of freeway around the City of Calgary.
