For us, success is not only design—it’s design in synergy with governance and economic investment
Stephen Avenue in Calgary, Alberta is in decline and needs to attract new uses that will diversify the public life of the street—inviting more people to live, work, eat, shop, rest, play, socialize, and be entertained. Movement patterns are conflicting and need a reset balance between movement and place to define a safe, future-proof mobility network.
Stantec, in collaboration with Gehl Studio and James Lima Planning & Development, has delivered a bold, innovative, and visionary reinvention of downtown Calgary’s most iconic and historic street. This roadmap regenerates the street’s role, function, and experience and connects to other downtown initiatives through strategies and actions to spur investment. We recognized design alone would not be enough. A new framework for governance will be essential to coordinate and attract investment for brand and identity, ground floor activation, and programming.
Our in-depth public life data, strategies, and design alternatives now have community support. The team is currently launching prototype and experiment—a chance to test big ideas at full scale on the street before confirming a final design.
