Developing an access route to downtown and surrounding developing areas
The Greater Downtown Action Plan (GDAP) provided recommendations relative to the Taylor Drive corridor near the Riverlands redevelopment area in Red Deer, Alberta. Transforming Taylor Drive into a downtown access route, while improving multi-modal travel through downtown districts, and accommodating access requirements for the future Riverlands district was a key request. Our team was up to the task.
Multi-modal and context sensitive design was completed for all areas and included redevelopment of the Taylor Drive transportation corridor in accordance with the preferred plan. Pedestrian accommodation, integration of a complete streets design standard for 53 Avenue, and landscape architecture were imperative to the long-term vision of the area and were incorporated into the final design. The total cost of the roadway improvements was tendered at approximately $16 million. We also completed roadway concrete work, landscaping and landscape architecture, pedestrian/cyclist trails, street furniture, illumination, and traffic signals.
The community now enjoys ease of access into the Riverlands redevelopment area, as well as the additional route into downtown. To top it off, pedestrians and cyclists can enjoy visually pleasing landscape architecture as they travel.
