Improving roads and bridges for people, goods, and transit in Metro Vancouver

Metro Vancouver wanted to improve the commute for their residents and commercial traffic. Over 130 million tonnes of cargo passes through Port Metro Vancouver’s terminals each year, and that cargo needs efficient truck access to British Columbia highways. But commuter arteries were heavily congested in Delta and Surrey. The answer? South Fraser Perimeter Road—a new, convenient connection along the Fraser River that links industrial business operations, port facilities, and major highways and bridges across the Lower Mainland.

The new four-lane highway includes three interchanges and multiple at-grade intersections. The shoulders along the new highway are designed to accommodate cyclists and connect to municipal cycling networks. Despite challenging site soil conditions and environmental/archaeological constraints, we were able to fast track the project and open ahead of schedule, which was a key goal in the Province’s Pacific Gateway Transportation Strategy.

With improved access to major trade gateways, increased development in designated industrial areas, a stronger economy through the safe and efficient movement of goods, and shortened commute times, South Fraser Perimeter Road is delivering impressive outcomes.
