Getting around through rain, snow, or shine with new year-round walking and cycling options
In a picture-perfect mountain setting, the City of Revelstoke is home to around 8,000 residents and a destination for around 7,000 visitors annually. With this comes a unique set of transportation challenges—kids getting to school, skiers heading to the slopes, and mountain bikers hitting the trails. Factor in harsh winter conditions and walking and cycling get more challenging. That’s where a transportation master plan (TMP) comes in. The City engaged us to help identify critical transportation infrastructure, garner feedback from the community, and plan the timing and costs for improvements.
Through reviewing existing plans, public input, and collaborating with champions of local active transportation, we identified deficiencies in the pedestrian and cycling network. Using this information, we developed a prioritization plan to complete and enhance the transportation network. Finding new ways to source data, our team produced models created with real vehicle count and cellphone data to track traffic patterns at different times of the day and seasonally. We also used the City's online engagement platform to gather hundreds of pinned locations where community members flagged maintenance, accessibility, walking, cycling, or traffic issues.
Revelstoke Council approved the TMP and arrangements are now underway to implement the plan.
