Quarry Park Fish Habitat Compensation Program
During the emergency response following the June 2013 flood, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) issued Fisheries Act authorizations to The City of Calgary (the City) with the provision that habitat loss would be compensated. The City identified several concepts to replace the lost fish habitat along the Bow River, ultimately selecting the one kilometer-long Quarry Park side channel—we were there to help bring it to life.
Our project team of aquatic biologists, geomorphologists, structural engineers, wildlife specialists, landscape architects, and river engineers, was selected to work with the City. They delivered geomorphic assessments, a biophysical impact assessment, one-dimensional and two-dimensional hydraulic modelling, preliminary and detailed designs, and the tender package. Maximizing the aquatic and riparian value of the site, we developed solutions in alignment with natural conditions, engineered large woody debris habitat features, vegetated islands, ephemeral channels, and diverse microhabitats including wetlands, terraces, and overflow routes.
The DFO approved 85,000 wetted habitat units—1.5 times than expected. This allowed for increased breeding and ultimately restored an abundance of fish to the Bow River after the flooding event.
