Helping a community protect their environment
Peguis First Nation needed to evaluate two former landfill sites existing on their reserve. The first was a large decommissioned landfill. It had been capped and required a formal closure plan to guide how the facility would be managed going forward to protect the community and environment. The second site was small and had previously been relocated, but remnants remained—our goal was to evaluate what materials were at the site and how they needed to be managed.
Using a combination of electromagnetic surveying and historical air photo review, we evaluated the location of the formerly removed site, which pre-dates the memory of most community members. Then, we created a soil and groundwater sampling plan to evaluate the presence of subsurface impacts from with former landfilling activities—while executing these programs, we hired people from the community and provided hands-on training.
This project provided the community with additional information regarding these two impacted sites, and a plan for how to move forward with them. The closure plan for the large site included capacity-building actions that could be undertaken by band members to self-monitor the site, and helped bring the community one step closer to their goal of developing this former landfill site into a recreational development for everyone to enjoy.
