Dakota Plains First Nation Solid Waste Management Options Feasibility Study

Poorly situated next to a creek and subjected to unauthorized dumping, the Dakota Plains First Nation needed to close their existing waste disposal ground. They needed a new plan to manage waste going forward, with a focus on opportunities for the community. We stepped in to help.

Our first step was to evaluate three potential options: implementing a direct haul curbside collection program with disposal an off-reserve regional landfill, establishing a new transfer station on-reserve with disposal at an off-reserve regional landfill or establish a waste to energy (WTE) facility on-reserve. These options were summarized and presented to the community for feedback–involvement of the local community members and enhancing community employment opportunities are a focus of this project. The community agreed with the results of our feasibility study, which recommended establishing a plan for a curbside collection program for the 41-household community.

The Dakota Plains Community had been wanting to improve their waste management system for years. Under this feasibility study, the community has already begun to see tangible changes to their waste management system, including the procurement of a new collection vehicle and progress on agreements with regional waste and recycling processors.
