A gateway city transforms into a beacon for mixed-use development and connectivity

Anchored south of Boston is Attleboro: a gateway city in the midst of a downtown urban renewal. Over the past two decades, city officials, mayors, governors, and residents have linked to move the city forward as a vibrant and connected urban center. In continuation of the City’s effort, Attleboro called on our team to help them transform 18 acres of land into a thriving mixed-use urban village.

Working closely with the City, we identified an optimal transit-oriented development (TOD) approach that balances the imminent growth of demand on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Commuter Rail Station with opportunities to diversify and increase vibrant and complementary mixed uses, and made the most of the geographic positioning of the district in relation to other natural features and access opportunities for alternative transportation modes. Through discussions with potential developers and the general public, multiple development scenarios were designed along with an implementation approach that aligns with the trajectory of the City's other long-term priorities and partnerships.

Our TOD vision and plan acts as a valuable tool including a draft request for proposal to be tailored for interested developers to help the city solidify its existing partnerships. It supports catalyzing a smart development approach that will address the changing needs of transportation while also facilitating strategic economic growth.
