Oscar Creek Bridge Rehabilitation
When the Government of the Northwest Territories discovered that the Oscar Creek bridge foundation was threatened by the meandering creek it was crossing just off of the Mackenzie Valley Winter Road (MVWR), they hired our team at K’alo-Stantec, a majority Sahtu beneficiary-owned business, to relocate and rehabilitate the bridge.
Bringing local knowledge and cold region bridge engineering experience, K’alo-Stantec has previously completed numerous engineering investigations, assessments, and studies on Oscar Creek, which will help mitigate numerous hydrotechnical, geotechnical, archaeological, and environmental considerations and acquire the required permits. Our project team will relocate the bridge upstream and mitigate disruption to vehicle paths on the MVWR. Additionally, the design and construction of the bridge relocation and any additional tributary crossings will need to minimize impact to the Sahtu Lands. Our project teams aim to preserve the land through traditional knowledge studies and community engagement.
Our team will determine the most effective tributary option for construction, complete reclamation of the existing bridge site while preserving natural beauty in the area, and, where possible, recruit local labor and businesses.
