Rehabilitating a main stretch of highway for safe passage through beautiful Kouchibouguac

Kouchibouguac, a Mi'kmaq word meaning “river of long tides,” is a national park near Kent, New Brunswick, that covers 238 square-kilometers of barrier islands, sand dunes, lagoons, beaches, and forests. More than 165,000 visitors take in Kouchibouguac’s natural beauty each year, making safe road conditions a priority. Our team was brought on to repair a 24 kilometer stretch of Route 117, the existing park highway, that would support safe traffic and promote travel to Kouchibouguac.

We rehabilitated a section of road that was last paved in the early 1990s—frost heaving, rutting, cracking, and washouts caused severe deterioration of the roadway. The goal was to realign and widen sections of Route 117 while limiting our impact on the existing landscape, sensitive ecosystem, and park users. The rehabilitation involved 2,000 meters of new culverts, 340,000 tons of granular roadway materials, and 50,000 tons of asphalt.

Completed in a single season, the project required frequent collaboration and a round-the-clock construction schedule. Our team brought Route 117 up to current geometric design standards, ensuring a safe passage for year-round use through Kouchibouguac National Park.
