Road expansion from Old Richmond Road to West Hunt Club Road Ottawa
As Kanata South and Stittsville continue to grow, the need for the City of Ottawa to increase the capacity of transportation links to the urban core has intensified.
A portion of the land that was part of this project was the federally owned Stony Swamp Wetland. This swamp is on of the most ecologically diverse protected area in the Ottawa Valley. The city needed to find a solution that would protect the wetland and ensure approval of the many stakeholders which consisted of environmental advocacy groups, first nations groups, the National Capital Commission, Environment and Climate Change Canada, along with several internal City Departments.
Stantec helped the city develop a design that reduced the impact of the planned road on the environment. The design team worked with the city and stakeholders to create a cost-effective concept which used retaining walls to ensure that the road was kept as narrow as possible, the walls acted as barriers to wildlife preventing interaction with the travelling public.
Together with a subconsultant, we are providing construction administration services for this project, with a completion date in the fall of 2020.
