Mitigating traffic safety issues
With its adjacent one-way lanes leading to numerous head-on collisions, Highway 50 is recognized as one of the most dangerous roads in Quebec. Pending the completion of the widening of the road, the Quebec Government wanted to quickly and temporarily secure a particularly dangerous stretch of this road between Gatineau and L'Ange-Gardien. Our team was commissioned by the Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable (MTMD) to address this problem.
We designed a high-tension cable barrier that was installed over 5.4 kilometres (3.4 miles) to separate the two lanes and prevent vehicles from getting into head-on collision. Our team tailored the pilot project to the specific characteristics of the road, in terms of the pavement, the anchoring system, the location of the posts and the lighting. Acting as a safety net for vehicles, the cable barrier could be removed by authorities to gain access to the opposite lane, if required.
Installed in 2020, the barrier has proved its effectiveness in preventing head-on collisions as no serious or fatal accidents occurred between its installation and its removal in 2023 when the highway widening work began to take place.
