Developing positive changes without disruption
Many of the bridges on Highway 401 between Kitchener and Windsor have been identified as condition deficient and functionally obsolete. A bridge replacement strategy, including provisions for Highway 401 expansion and interchange improvements, was initiated. The resulting preliminary design and environmental assessment study included plans to replace the Highway 401 structures at Norwich Avenue (Woodstock), Highway 19 (Ingersoll), and Westminster Drive (London). Several innovative interchange configurations at the bridge locations were identified to minimize replacement costs, yet be flexible enough to accommodate future development and traffic demands.
Our team held a Value Engineering Workshop and a Get In – Get Out (GiGo) Bridge Workshop to identify innovative strategies for removing and replacing the structures using accelerated construction techniques. Through this approach we were able to minimize the duration of construction and the associated traffic disruptions.
The project was documented in a Transportation Environmental Study Report that received environmental clearance from the Ministry of the Environment.
