Providing a home for 600 students
Travelling to Corner Brook to study at Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Grenfell Campus? Not a problem. The university reserves a room in residence for any first-year student from outside the city. To provide this guarantee the campus opened a new 200 bed residence so that 600 students can now live on campus.
We provided quality control inspection and testing services to make sure this major investment was properly constructed to meet design specifications. For this, we monitored placement of structural fill for the building pad, inspected founding levels at footing locations, did a backfill inspection around foundation walls and interior pier footings, and tested fresh concrete properties and inspected asphalt placement. With our Corner Brook laboratory only minutes away, we were easily able to test concrete cylinders and asphalt to make sure these materials could handle load requirements. We also completed soils, sieve and proctor testing to make sure the soil was compacted to its maximum density and optimal moisture content, meaning the soil would support the building’s structure and would not further settle.
