Developing a major centre for trade in Regina
A 1,700 acre site near the Regina airport is transforming into a Global Transportation Hub (GTH). It began with the City of Regina’s decision to move the CP Rail multi-modal railway facility out of downtown and has blossomed into a massive inland port operation.
Stantec was involved with this project in a planning capacity. We then moved into infrastructure. We were asked to serve as owner’s engineer—essentially the engineering and planning department for the GTH Authority. Our role and the project itself was breaking new ground. In fact, we wrote our own set of engineering standards.
While GTH is within Regina city limits, authority has transferred from the city to the GTH. Some of the unique features of this project are wide roadways that are made up of four lanes including shoulders, large storm water detention ponds and large parcels of land.
500 acres of land is rough graded and 4.5 kilometers of roadway built. CP Rail’s intermodal facility is now operating on this site. Loblaw’s 1.1 million square foot warehouse, and Emterra—the city’s new recycling contractor—are both in service as well. Other companies have land for logistics, warehousing, export, and distribution.
