Our transportation planning kept traffic moving during construction and reduces driver holdups longer-term
Glenmore Trail heads east from Deerfoot Trail, crossing Canadian Pacific’s main line at the Ogden Road interchange in southeast Calgary. Drivers found their commutes slow when a train crossed the highway. The industrial area also sees a lot of truck traffic using Glenmore Trail which had a reduced speed limit at this interchange.
Our team partnered with CH2M to deliver two bridges: one for Glenmore Trail over Ogden Road and a second over the rail tracks and canal. Significant roadworks included raising Glenmore Trail by more than 10 meters in some locations and upgrading the storm, water, and sanitary utilities in the area. Our main challenge was keeping the 40,000 cars and trucks that use the road each day moving during construction. Traffic flow planning allowed work to continue while keeping four lanes of traffic open. Seasonal timing was also a factor with construction scheduled over the winter so the canal could be temporarily filled and the bridge constructed.
Beautiful public art decorates the pillars of the completed Ogden Road bridge with colorful mosaics showcasing local landscape and neighborhood features. Together, these bridges help speed up commutes across the rail, road, and water crossings.
