A geotechnical investigation and a slope stability analysis to keep the community safe
Having experienced multiple failures during heavy rain events, a large road embankment in Riding Mountain West need to be repaired. Without it, the community could not travel safely on the road—we came in to help.
The remediation option that was chosen involved rebuilding the site using native material with a geogrid reinforcement and constructing a granular berm downslope of the roadway at the critical location for added stability. The toe of the slope was lined with a large riprap to protect against erosion in a heavy runoff event. We were retained to perform construction tendering and monitoring, survey control and contract administration. The construction was completed over the span of 4.5 months and involved 37,000 m³ of excavation, 24,000 m³ of fill placement with 24,000 m² of geogrid reinforcement, 13,000 tons of riprap placement, 3,000 m³ of gabion basket installations and 6,000 tons of roadway granular placement.
On this project, we really learned how important it is to talk to the community you work in. Farmers had been cutting deep trenches to drain their farm fields, causing much more intense flood conditions for similar rainfall events of the past—seeking local background knowledge was key. Now complete, the open road will continue to serve as a safe passageway for the community to enjoy.
