Revitalizing Calgary's East Village into a vibrant cultural hub
In transforming the East Village, the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) expected to start from the ground up. Stantec’s geotechnical team helped them go deeper.
Calgary’s East Village has long been associated with urban apathy. Like many urban centres, this section of downtown was populated by run down or abandoned buildings and out of date infrastructure. In order to revitalize the area, CMLC needed to know what they were dealing with below the surface.
Stantec’s geotechnical team drilled over 200 boreholes and groundwater monitoring wells ten metres below East Village, along with numerous three metre test pits.
Through these underground investigations, Stantec was able to give CMLC geotechnical recommendations that they needed to begin revitalizing East Village’s infrastructure. In addition to the 4th Street underpass, the required upgrades included underground utilities, retaining structures, lift stations, and roadways.
Stantec continues to provide testing and consultations as East Village is getting closer to becoming one of the most vibrant cultural hubs in Calgary.
