As pavement management systems evolve, so do our practices—allowing us to accommodate new technology and improve roadways
Supplying the City of Calgary with accurate and comprehensive data has been Stantec’s long-standing objective since the late 1980s. Though, thanks to more suitable tools and databases, the ways in which we have stored, managed, and used that data have changed. In 2012, our team helped the City convert and migrate their existing pavement management system (MPMA) to an upgraded highway pavement management application (HPMA) software package.
By defining the street network, customizing the software, training the City’s staff members, developing the engineering model, and preparing a final pavement management report, we created an effective pavement plan for the City that will improve their 9,160-kilometre highway network.
Next up after the conversion? A five-year data collection contract. We gathered pavement performance data annually on 1,800 kilometres of the City’s arterial, collector, and industrial roads. This information was then uploaded into the new HPMA system to generate status reports for the paved road network. Project-level pavement evaluations were also performed, including falling weight deflectometer testing, ground-penetrating radar surveys, and coring.
Overall, this software implementation and data effort has given the City of Calgary the ability to develop future maintenance programs that will meet their budgetary criteria and provide the best cost-benefit ratio.
