We’re helping six countries neighbouring the European Union be better prepared for when disaster strikes
The second phase of the Program for Prevention, Preparedness, and Response to Natural and Man-made Disasters (PPRD)—an EU-funded initiative—aims to improve resiliency against natural and man-made disasters in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine—a group also known as the Eastern Partnership countries.
Building on previous programs, the second phase’s challenge is to strengthen partner countries’ civil protection capacities for disaster prevention, preparedness, and response, and improve regional cooperation, bringing the Eastern Partnership countries progressively closer to EU civil protection.
Our role includes completing assessments and elaborating on road maps and regional and national action plans. Our people help the Partnership countries navigate the differences between their legal and institutional frameworks and EU legislation and good practices, as they apply to civil protection and disaster risk management. We also help with training and awareness-raising activities including table-top exercises and a joint regional exercise. With regular exchanges of information, participating states share expertise and best practices.
By strengthening each countries’ disaster risk prevention and management, this flagship initiative aims to contribute to the stability, security, and prosperity of each country. With that success, they are further able to protect the environment, population, cultural heritage, resources, and infrastructure of the region.
