Sometimes great transportation planning involves knowing what to do when the vehicles aren’t running
With a growing bus network, Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS) wanted to reduce the need for buses to sit within a City interchange while also improving bus connectivity between the layover and interchange. Working with Infrastructure Delivery Partners Group, TCCS set out to create the New City West Bus Layover and engaged us to provide design services.
Our works consisted of detail design of intersection geometry, bus turning movements, active travel path connections, and building layout and servicing. We also addressed stormwater mitigation requirements to reduce the impact and frequency of flooding and provided retaining walls and landscaping, including the staging and planting of 25 trees. Additionally, we widened an existing path and intersection to accommodate increases in people walking and cycling into the city and to Australian National University.
Recently completed, the facility provides parking for 25 buses for both short and long duration layovers, a full meal room and toilet facilities for drivers, and much improved underground flood storage. A through lane provides direct access to the layover from a major feeder street.
