Potomac River Commuter Ferry Service

Our team was asked to study the viability of a high-speed commuter ferry on the Potomac River to serve Northern Virginia and Southern Maryland. This commuter ferry will provide an alternate means of transportation for commuters to avoid the highly congested I-95 corridor during rush hours. As part of the study, we organized a three-day, invitation-only ferry service to determine the feasibility of running a high-speed ferry and procured a high-speed ferry located in Massachusetts that met the requirements for our test run.

We examined possible routes, and identified 13 potential service points. The run schedule enabled our team to assess the routes and possible schedules for a potential ferry service operation. A testing procedure was developed to measure the height of the boat’s wake by mounting an underwater pressure sensor in the middle of the Potomac River. We also made provisions to study noise impact levels for the residences and parks along the river.

After a three-day test run that ferried more than 500 people around the proposed routes, we submitted our conclusions. Our client is seeking funding for our proposal.
