Designing better level crossings to improve safety and accessibility for local communities
Like many country towns, Wellington and Tamworth in New South Wales have a lot of legacy rail safety infrastructure that often finds itself in the need of an upgrade. We are there to help.
The Level Crossing Improvement Program (LCIP) was put in place by Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) to upgrade level crossings across the Country Rail Network (CRN). We were engaged by the contractor responsible for the maintenance and operation of that section of CRN to design upgrades for six level crossings, three in each town. Across the two towns, we created detailed designs for upgraded road crossings, pedestrian crossings, and for closing an unsafe vehicle crossing. The upgrades in Tamworth were in part due to the increased capacity driven by more rail traffic as part of the Tamworth Intermodal freight facility. This included the re-activation of a pre-existing line which needed upgrades to the level crossings.
The design challenges focused on ensuring that the crossings were compliant with all accessibility and disability access standards and had the appropriate drainage system and utility access. With the construction now complete, the crossings now ensure safe access for all members of the community.
