A dedicated shared cycleway safely connects communities and enhances safety for users of all ages
Located a short distance from Mossman in tropical Far North Queensland, Cooya Beach is a popular community recreational destination. To make traversing the route safer for cyclists and pedestrians—including schoolchildren making the trip—a new 4.7 kilometre (3 mile) cycleway will connect Mossman to Cooya Beach.
Working with the Douglas Shire Council, our active transportation team provided the technical assessment and design for the Cooya Beach to Mossman shared cycleway and pedestrian bridge. This project addresses missing links and barriers currently presenting significant obstacles for safe transit from Mossman to Cooya Beach. These obstacles include railway lines, river crossings, and greenspace traverses, each of which presented unique engineering challenges.
This large-scale project is part of the Far North Queensland Principal Cycle Network Plan 2016. A 50 per cent grant towards the full cost of this project was made possible due to the Queensland Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants Program. Upon completion, the cycleway will enhance safety, recreational opportunities, and quality of life for the connected communities.
