Improving a flood warning system for regional communities
Located on the southern coast of New South Wales the Bega and Brogo River catchments are surrounded by native forests, national parks, and townships. To improve the Total Flood Warning System for nearby communities, the Bega Valley Shire Council engaged us to provide a full feasibility and scoping study.
Collaborating with the community, all levels of government, and local emergency services played a key role when reviewing the existing flood warning system for the Bega Valley community. Flooding is a natural part of the environment for this region, so understanding how to manage and live in the communities at risk of flooding is important. Our flood resilience team completed community and stakeholder engagement, floodplain risk management, and a full analysis of the flood warning practices in place.
Following the national framework, monitoring and predicative models, communication strategies, protective behaviour, and review processes will help Bega Valley and other communities better respond to floods, now and in the future.
