Making the most of local parks to meet the needs of all community users
Making the most of open-space and resources like local parks is becoming increasingly important in improving the liveability of our communities. The sports fields at Gardiner Park, Banksia NSW had become dilapidated and were identified by Bayside Council for upgrades. We were engaged to prepare detailed designs to deliver a park upgrade which included the installation of a synthetic sports field.
As the park lies in a floodway, it was critical that the upgrade dealt with potential flood impacts. After a detailed hydraulic assessment and stormwater drainage design using the modelling software, DRAINS, the site was inundated with water from upstream catchments and the design was tweaked to deliver a regrading solution which minimised flood impacts.
During the design phase, we created detailed designs and plans for bulk earthworks, pavements, the stormwater and drainage system, erosion and sediment plans, and the design of the sports field. We also created a detailed site survey involving the management and location of utility services and managed sub-consultants providing irrigation design and quantity surveying. Construction on-site also had to deal with the discovery of a heritage sandstone wall, which we built into the design and managed appropriately.
