We devised several innovative strategies and design solutions to meet the challenges of the site, which borders the M1.
Places for People was ready to develop a new community on the eastern edge of Milton Keynes. Their goal? An impressive new landscape character, 2,500 new homes, and a complete range of commercial, retail, and community facilities.
At the heart of the development are Brooklands Ridge, Brooklands Meadows, and Broughton Brook Linear Park—newly-created features for which we won the 2010 Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation Environmental Award. This landscape design provides an important area of public open space and habitat creation as well as protection from motorway noise and pollution from the M1.
We also provided innovative and award-winning flood risk and surface water management solutions, allowing for surfacing water attenuation facilities to be integrated within open space at Brooklands Meadows and the southern Linear Park. The bespoke design of the open spaces is an important part of our sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) solution.
When it came to the delivery of a multi-utility solution (including surface water, foul water, potable water, gas, electricity, and telecoms), our contributions created a substantial saving for the client and realised earlier delivery of the services to the site—complete with fibre to the home (digital connectivity). This meant that the client could deliver infrastructure, landscaping, and the first school early, before the first house was built.
