Optimizing sludge dewatering efficiency and providing a cleaner, safer work environment
For a system last upgraded in the 1990s, sludge dewatering equipment in the City of High Point’s Westside Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) was reaching the end of its service life. In addition, insufficient ventilation and no odor removal created an undesirable work environment for operations and maintenance staff. The City engaged us to help.
We reviewed the dewatering system and suggested improvements to gain floor space, improve maintenance operations, and remove odors. Based on our recommendations, the City opted to replace the dewatering equipment, install a new odor control system, and provide minor architectural improvements. The building height and existing equipment layout limited material handling options, but we were able to optimize equipment layout to accommodate a traveling bridge crane. Our services included preliminary engineering, final design, permitting, pre-construction equipment procurement, bidding, and engineering services during construction.
With this design, the City met its goal for a new sludge dewatering facility that meets current demands while leaving room for future expansion.
