U.S. Air Force PFAS Impact Evaluations

As per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) regulations continue to evolve, additional PFAS are identified as risk drivers and are required for consideration under the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) process. To address current and potential future PFAS on their bases, the U.S. Air Force engaged our PFAS specialists to support a thorough review of data from 29 Air Force installations.

They tasked us with gaining a better understanding of PFAS present at and around Air Force sites as well as which are currently or should also be considered to adequately capture the risk. This included regulatory risk as well as risks due to toxicity, high concentration, mobility, transformation potential, treatment, and other areas. The objective was the highlighting of PFAS that should be considered in the CERCLA process beyond those currently regulated and that represent likely underestimated risk.

The final report presents a detailed statistical review, geographic presentations of installation data, and sensitivity analysis to help identify PFAS that may present underestimated risks. Additionally, it includes detailed toxicological reviews of PFAS and a review of state PFAS standards and the underlying toxicity assumptions, as they can vary from federal regulations.
