Unsignalized intersections on a highway are bound to cause bumps in the road. Our traffic studies can smooth these out.
The lack of signal at the US 285/NM 31 crossing was causing problems for drivers as traffic on the highway increased. Recognizing the need for change, a partnership was formed between Eddy County, New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) District 2, and South Region Design offices to choose a consultant who could help them move forward—they determined our team was the right fit for the job.
With heavy truck volume, abundant gas and oil lines, and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroad, our transportation team understood coordination would be key to this project’s success. We first studied existing traffic patterns, volumes, and crash data, before reached out to the public and stakeholders to understand their needs. Feedback suggested moving the intersection to the south and tying in with the County’s proposed realignment of another road. While we identified 13 alternatives, we ultimately chose the most affordable option to help save the County money. Tying the project into the road realignment improved cost effectiveness and completed another step of the County’s goals. We have continued to provide design services throughout the project and are currently in the final phases of design.
The finished project will make the highway a safer place to drive, while advancing the County’s mission to protect its residents.
