Stantec wins four national engineering design awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies

Transportation projects in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Minnesota demonstrate an exceptional degree of innovation, complexity, achievement, and value

05/25/2022 NEW YORK, NY TSX, NYSE:STN

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, received four National Recognition Awards in the American Council of Engineering Companies’ (ACEC) 2022 Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) competition. The annual competition recognizes engineering firms for projects that demonstrate an exceptional degree of innovation, complexity, achievement, and value. A total of 195 projects across the nation were recognized at the Awards Gala in Washington, DC.

The firm’s award-winning projects include:

New York State Thruway Authority Conversion to Cashless Tolling
The $355 million design-build project implemented cashless tolling along 450 miles of roadway, allowing the more than 267 million motorists that use the Thruway each year to enjoy hassle-free travel. The new system went live in November 2020, with 70 steel gantries installed along the roadway to capture E-ZPass tag or license plate data. Stantec and KC Engineering served as the lead designers, supporting Cashless Tolling Constructors, LLC—a consortium of heavy civil contractors. The project included the removal of toll plazas and updates to the areas leading into and out of the plazas, including pavement repairs, positive separation of traffic flow, and elimination of conflicting traffic moves. Reconstruction work was completed in Fall 2021.

Route 3, Route 46, Valley Road and Notch/Rifle Camp Road Interchange Improvements Project
The $74.7 million project is providing safer and more efficient travel for the more than 150,000 vehicles that travel through the Route 3, Route 46, and Valley Road Interchange daily. Stantec provided design and engineering services for the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) project, in addition to environmental studies and permitting, public outreach, overall project management, and construction support. Substantially completed in December 2019, it was initially envisioned as one project, but it became clear during design that potential funding constraints could risk its timely advancement. Stantec worked with NJDOT to determine how to feasibly phase the project into smaller contracts, resulting in the development of two independent construction contracts.

Replacement of Edmondson Avenue Bridge Over Gwynn
Stantec provided comprehensive inspection engineering services, a load rating and coatings evaluation, and studies for rehabilitation versus replacement for a deteriorating bridge in Baltimore that was originally built in 1907. After the decision was made to replace the bridge, it was important to consider the urban setting of Edmondson Avenue as well as the bridge’s historic value. Other challenges included adjacent historic row houses, a trail/bike path, Gwynns Falls, a railway, and a cemetery. As such, the design team gained consensus with various stakeholders and the public by providing timely and informative coordination—which was critical to the project’s success. The reconstructed bridge, designed by Stantec, incorporates architectural arch facades to recognize the historic nature of the original structure and provides a safe and secure structure for commuters and pedestrians on Route 40.

Baudette Rainy River International Bridge Replacement
Stantec led the project coordination for the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) project, which involved more than 90 stakeholders. With the nearest alternate crossing 70 miles away, developing a staging plan to maintain traffic during construction was required for emergency vehicle access, sustaining regional commerce, and preserving the day-to-day activities of the two communities, including the 24-hour Ports of Entry. The replacement bridge is a 1,350-foot-long, 48.2-foot-wide, 5-span haunched continuous steel girder structure located immediately upstream of the existing bridge. The structure includes two travel lanes and accommodations for pedestrians and bicycles. It opened to traffic in October 2020 and was fully completed in October 2021.

ACEC’s annual Engineering Excellence Awards competition honors the year’s most outstanding engineering accomplishments across a range of categories. Projects across the nation are rated on uniqueness and innovative applications; future value to the engineering profession; perception by the public; social, economic, and sustainable development considerations; complexity; and the successful fulfillment of client/owner’s needs.

Stantec’s Transportation practice creates the connections that get people and goods moving safely and efficiently—whether by car, bus, train, plane, or their own two feet. Ranked among the top International Design Firms in Transportation by Engineering News-Record, Stantec provides planning, engineering, and infrastructure management services that fit client needs and improve the overall transportation experience.
