We worked long and odd hours over the summer to fully commission the project with no open issues prior to the Fall semester
The Frederick Douglass Building, although a central hub to the University of Rochester campus, was outdated and included floors of unused space. A full renovation would welcome a new first floor dining facility with micro-kitchen style dining, faculty dining, and catering preparation areas along with kitchen space, event spaces, and a multicultural learning center.
Stantec was contracted by the University to provide commissioning services for the major renovation. Our team worked closely with the owner and construction team to commission all equipment prior to students arriving in the fall. Commissioned equipment for this project included air handling units, pumps, and heat exchangers as well as terminal units, exhaust fans, rooftop units, and split systems. We also commissioned kitchen hoods, fire dampers, the building automation system, electrical service, lighting controls, and the domestic hot water system.
The schedule was tight between building completion and final commissioning, but we were able to accomplish our goals with all major issues closed out on time. The new space provided the incoming student body with necessary extra dining and event space, refreshing the central hub to provide an improved experience for students and faculty.
