Fulfilling successful grants for municipal vulnerability preparedness
When communities in Massachusetts look to address climate change, the Massachusetts Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) grant program provides financial support for projects. The City of Somerville received grant funding for planning and modeling analysis to determine how green infrastructure could reduce flooding within its vulnerable areas. They looked to us for professional consulting services to identify and recommend opportunities for stormwater management.
Our design team modeled stormwater management opportunities within six flood-prone areas to evaluate green infrastructure impacts on flooding. For each area, we provided the City with recommendations to guide future planning for green infrastructure initiatives, water quality benefits, and design guidelines. We also conducted a workshop with key stakeholders to provide a path forward on public education of stormwater practices in the community. Following the workshop, our team developed communication materials in the four key languages spoken within the community—English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Creole—for the City's website, social media, and print materials.
With community involvement and a stormwater management plan in hand, the City of Somerville has a clearer path toward managing the effects of a changing climate.
